The Christmas Dragon

Draco was a dragon and he really didn't fit
It was Christmas in the kingdom and he had no part of it
All the townsfolk were real busy, but old Draco was real bored
Because dragons around Christmas time just plain get flat ignored

Song: “Have yourself a merry little Christmas

“I am such a lonesome, lonesome dragon
No one pays me mind
I can't get attention during Christmas time
The people are so busy
I am such a lonesome, lonesome dragon
Wish they'd notice me
Big and green don't matter when they do not see
So now it is a lonesome dragon I will be”

Tongues of folks in town at other times would be all waggin'
With the legends and the stories of the nearby fearsome dragon
They would tell of how this beastie flew real high up in the air
And would terrorize the villagers who lived below him there

“I'm a feisty, fearsome dragon of which everyone's afraid
I can flap and swoop and zoom and flame and all the town invade
I'm the strongest and the fiercest and the bravest of them all
O'er the country hill and dale I am revered by big and small.”

Well the dragon got to thinking and he came up with a plan
That he thought would get attention both from woman and from man
He determined that for Christmas he'd invent a simulation
That allowed him to participate in Yuletide celebration

“I know just what I'll do,”declared the dragon midst his thoughts.
“I'll become a part of Christmas for the grownups and the tots
Now I wonder just what part of celebrating I should be
I'm big, I'm green, I think I will become the Christmas tree.”

Song: Oh Christmas Tree

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree
A dragon is inside of thee
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree
Oh what an awesome tree I'll be

I'll stand up tall with lights so bright
The villagers will love my height
Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree
A dragon is inside of thee

To the village square he went one night so very late and stood
Dressed up with lights and stars and things – he thought he looked real good
And when the sun came up at dawn, a princess came to town
And strolled into the plaza in her gorgeous princess gown.

“Oh my, it smells so good out here,”the pretty princess raved
“I love the smell of Christmas, and the tree scent that I crave
Oh, look, here is a Christmas tree, I think that I will smell it
I know when it is Christmas time, because my nose does tell it.”

She walked up to our dragon friend and took a great big whiff
And then she walked around the tree and took another sniff
“How could this be,” the princess said, “ I cannot smell this tree
I think that I may have a cold, or something's wrong with me”

She sniffed and sniffed and snuffed and smelled, and twitched her little nose
And then she sneezed and coughed a bit and struck a curious pose
“I want to smell this Christmas tree, it is the thing I wish
But I don't smell an evergreen, I think I smell a fish!”

“It doesn't smell real good to me, it's rather like a swamp
I wonder where this tree came from,”she said with air and pomp
“I know what, I'll spray the tree with some of my perfume
It can't hurt, it will certainly the swampy smell consume.”

So from her sleeve she pulled a scarf, a heavy scented hanky
And waved it at the dragon tree, she swished it with a yanky
The perfume smell went everywhere, around the tree it spread
It made the dragon dizzy as it whirled about his head

He teetered and he tottered and he then became real stiff
He tried to stop a sneeze that he felt building from the whiff
He held his breath, the princess left, and disappeared from view
He couldn't hold it any more, the dragon roared “Ahhhh-Choo.”

“Ah-Choo, Ah-Choo, Ah-Choo, Ah-Choo, old Draco near regurged it
“It's clear to me,” the dragon wheezed, “to perfume I'm allergic.
I cannot be a Christmas tree, if people think I'm stinky
There must be quite another way,” he said, and sat and tried to thinky

It's clear they're all too busy to concern themselves with me,
So I'll dress up all in red and then it's Santa Clause I'll be.
They'll all line up for Santa, he's the major guy right now
There'll be no one more popular than me, for sure and how.”

So he went into his closet and he found a coat of red
And he found an old worn sock and put it right upon his head
He tied an old white sweater round his ears to make a beard
He thought he looked quite jolly, but he really looked quite weird

Then he strolled down to the village and walked right into the square
Where he spied the prince a sitting and he knew that he would care
So he danced right out in front of him and did a Santa look
But the prince was busy reading from a most intriguing book

Song: Santa Clause is Coming to Town

Oh, you better watch out, you better not cry
The big guy is here – oh me and oh my
Santa Clause is here in the square

He's big and he's tough, and famous it's true
He's wearing a suit that's red and not blue
Santa Clause is here in the square

See, Everybody loves him. He is a great big deal
And make no doubt about it, Santa Clause is very real

So, you better wake up, stop reading your book
Cause Santa is here, come give him a look
Santa Clause is here in the square

Well the prince just kept on reading, he was buried in the words
And the more the dragon danced about, the more he looked absurd
He wriggled and he sidestepped and he jiggled and he pranced
But the prince's eyes would not lift from the book and give a glance

“Hey you” the dragon hollered,“Don't you get it, I'm the man
Who gets noticed during Christmas, because everyone's a fan
That book can't be that interesting, I think I cannot stand it
Come on, come on, look up and see the fellow folks call Santa.”

The prince did pause and stood up tall and gazed a bit away
And saw the dragon dressed in red and wanting now to play
At first he stumbled back in fright, at such a giant elf
And then he couldn't help but start to laugh within himself.

Song: Deck the Halls

“Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
Ha-ha-ha-ha-hah, ha, ha, ha, hah
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
Ha-ha-ha-ha-hah, ha, ha, ha, hah
Hah, ha-ha ha, Hah, ha-ha ha,
Ha-ha-ha, ha-ha-ha, Hah, Hah, Hah
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
Ha-ha-ha-ha-hah, ha, ha, ha, hah

You'd think the dragon finally would love to get attention
But instead he was embarrassed by this humorous suggestion
For fear was what he relished, or at least some mild respect
He was not a funny dragon, it was worse than stark neglect

So he ran and disappeared so that his red face wouldn't show
And he hid away discreetly to a place no one would know
He took off the Santa costume and he stashed it in a bush
Then he sat again and tried to give his brain a little push

“I know what I can do,” he said,“I'm such a brilliant smarty
I'll be a great big toy and then I'll crash their Christmas party.
There's nothing that means Christmas like a sparkling brand new toy
It will surely get attention from most every girl and boy.”

“Now what toy shall I be,” he thought, it must be something rare
That will capture their attention and require them all to stare
I'm not sure just what to be to capture kid's imagination
I know, I'll do my best toy dragon imitation!”

So the dragon found a bow and tied it right around his neck
Then a wind-up crank securely on his back he did connect
And finally to make the kids a gift that really rocks
He created a huge present of himself within a box.

And then the king and queen came down and saw this big surprise
“What could this be?” pronounced the queen, “I can't believe my eyes!
A giant Christmas package resting here in village square
Who has left it here as evidence of the Yuletide season care?

Song: Let it Snow

What gift is this big and brightful
In this box wrapped so delightful
What could there be down inside?
We don't know, We don't know, We don't know

We're looking here all around it
And we've spied all up and down it
'Neath the wrapping just what will show
We don't know, We don't know, We don't know

And so the king and Queen looked round the box in great detail
Close examining the package and imagining a tale
Of what it could contain they wondered just what could it be
Inside a box so very large must be a gift that grand to see

And then the king demanded that the bow be pulled untied
And down the prince and princess came to see what was inside
The ribbon was unloosed and then the lid came toppling down
And the dragon toy was pulled out and displayed for all the town

Then said the king, “I can't believe what's now before my eyes
A dragon toy immense and huge – a Christmas day suprise
Who sent us such a gift?” he said,“Who could there be behind it?”
The Queen said, “Don't worry dear, just grab that key and tightly wind it!”

“What key?” said he, “Up there”said she, and pointed way up high
“I see it Dad,” yelled out the prince, “I'll give it a good try”
And so the boy jumped up and landed hard on Draco's back
He grabbed the key and turned it hard until he heard a crack

The dragon lurched and tried to move exactly like a toy
But found he couldn't move real smooth– his back hurt from the boy
He jittered, balked, and stutter-stepped and stumbled on his way
Not wanting now to stay he thought he'd come another day.

As Draco moved along in quirky jerks and nervous spurts
A whispering voice within him said, “My back now really hurts!”
He didn't wait around for someone else to turn his crank
He just kept moving down the road as if he had been yanked

The royalty did chase him down the street for quite a while
While the dragon limped and tottered and did stumble for a mile
When at last he did escape them all he fell into a heap
Landing hard upon the ground he slipped profoundly into sleep

The Dragon's mouth lay close beside a hole that housed a mouse
Who was freezing cold this season with no heat into his house
He was shivering and shaking and he thought he soon would die
“It is just too cold this Christmas”he did utter with a cry

Song: Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire

Winter's frigid and it's very cold
Spring is very far away
My house is frozen, and I cannot get warm
And soon there'll come another storm

Everybody knows the weather's gonna stay this way
At least another month or two
And so all I do while I shiver and shake
During Christmas, turn blue

And then the mouse felt just a gust of warm and sultry air
“Ohhhhh,” he said, “that felt so good, how did that come and where
I felt a breeze with heat and warmth, I wonder how it came.”
And then the wind blew down again, as if it were a flame.

“Ahhh, wonderful,” exclaimed the mouse, “That air is all so warming.
It fills my house, and warms my fur, this blessed Christmas morning.
And as the mouse was warmed he thought about his neighborhood
“I'll bet my forest friends would like some warm air in this wood.”

So when the mouse was nice and warmed he ran out from his hole
And saw the dragon lying there, and breathing nice and slow
“Ah-hah,” said he, “I understand how now my house gets heat
I'm going to get my friends, and let them warm their hands and feet.”

And so the mouse went through the wood and looked for all his friends.
He wanted them to come and go down where his hole descends
He found three that were close to him, a rabbit, skunk, and bear
And told them how the dragon had supplied him with warm air.

“Come to my house,” the mousy said,“and you will feel a breeze
To warm you up all over from your head down to your knees.”
And so the three did travel to their tiny friend's abode
To get a break from winter's very penetrating cold.

The skunk and rabbit squeezed right through and crawled into the hole
But the bear was far too big – he wasn't meant to be a mole.
So he struggled and he burrowed and he clawed with bearish pride
And at last let out a monstrous growl that pushed him down inside.

The bear did howl so loudly that he very nearly choked
The dragon jumped at such a sound, and then he quite awoke
“What was that noise?” the dragon said, “that roused me from my sleep.
I hope the people are not near, I'm in the forest deep.

I can't get their attention, if they smell me they will laugh,
And if I try to play with them, they jump upon my back.
These humans are not good for me, I'm best off when they fear me.
I just can't care for anyone, I don't want people near me.

I do not like these holidays, so much for Christmas cheer
There's no place in this world for me to be this time of year
What shall I do, where shall I go, what will become of me
I'm so discouraged, there's no place for dragons now to be.”

Below the ground these animals were listening to this stuff
And when they heard the dragon moan they all came quickly up
The dragon was surprised to see the animals had heard him
He had not seen the mouse's hole or known that he'd disturbed him.

The mouse and bear and skunk jumped out and latched onto the dragon
“We will not let you go,” mouse said, “so promise you'll be laggin'
'Round this hole this Christmas season, it's the first time we've been heated
Oh won't you stay with us this year? You see how much your needed?

“Say what?” the dragon said, amazed, “You want me here to stay?”
“You bet,” the mousey spoke, “You know you surely make our day.”
“But why,” said Draco, bending down, “Why would you start to fret
About a great big dragon that you just have barely met?”

The folks down in the village think I smell just like the fishes
And they laugh at me when I dress up in red to fill their wishes.
A Christmas toy I was and I was very badly treated
This holiday's not fun, it really has me quite defeated.”

“One thing's for sure,” the skunk spoke up, “there's no care for your smell
So stay and keep us nice and warm and you'll be treated well.”
“To laugh at you, we just won't do,”spoke up the bunny white.
For winter's just too cold all day and every single night.”

“We won't hurt you,“ said the bear,“and our promises we'll keep.
“Old winter's getting on, and now it's time for us to sleep”
“We're animals,” said mousey, “and we're nice when we are warm
So we can't approve of doing special dragons any harm.”

We're very peaceful animals, you'll see we really are
Our parents taught this to us from a story of a star
The story happened long ago, it is the very truth
It has important meaning for all creatures and for youth

Song: The Twelve Days of Christmas

Mouse:
The sky in the forest once shone a glorious star
The forest creatures saw it near and far
It shone down on all that were living here below
Blessing all who saw to live and to grow

Rabbit:
The star was a symbol of peace upon the earth
And signaled a place for a child's birth
He brought us a message of love and hope and care
For all the creatures were living there

Skunk:
The starlight reminds us now as we go to sleep
That love runs so strong, so pure and deep
His star that shone brightly was seen by one and all
And taught of peace that hovered o'er a stall

Mouse:
The star bears a message for all about our life
We must learn to live without the strife
You don't have to be something else than who you are
To find His peace inside just find His star.

So the dragon stayed and warmed his new-found, freezing forest friends
While he gathered the attention that he craved so without end.
They loved Draco cause he brought them warmth on chilly Christmas eve,
And the dragon learned to earn love all he had to do was breathe!

So remember when it seems to you that you must have attention
A star shone once and gave more light than anyone could mention
It's light is peace and love and joy and all it's beams are snaggin'
Warmth to all just like the fiery breath of one great Christmas Dragon.
